What are Terpenes? Why are Terpenes Important...

Terpenes are produced by all plants, including the Hemp and Cannabis plants.  Cannabaceae produce over 140 different terpenes, according to ProjectCBD. 

This diverse class of organic elements are extracted from plant matter to create natural byproducts, including teas and tinctures. Terpenes are responsible for giving every cannabis strain its unique and enjoyable aroma.

Why are terpenes extracted from cannabis?

Some people may extract terpenes to enjoy the unique aroma of a particular cannabis strain as an essential oil, others may extract terpenes to treat universal medical conditions.

According to the British Journal of Pharmacology,  they studied the medicinal benefits of these non-psychoactive cannabis and hemp derived terpenes:

• Limonene– Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer. 
• Myrcene – Anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-mutagenic. 
• Linalool – Antinociceptive and anticonvulsant. 
• α-Pinene – Anti-inflammatory and chondroprotective properties. 
• Caryophyllene – Anti-inflammatory and analgesic.
• Camphene – Antioxidant and hypolipidemic agent.
